The Cowal Highland Gathering is taking place this weekend in Dunoon, Argyll. It is held annually over the last weekend in August and is the largest highland gathering in the world. The first Cowal Games were in 1894 with less than 2,000 spectators. Since then, the event has dramatically grown in size and reach. It now attracts over 3,500 competitors, with several coming from USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as more local areas. This weekend the Cowal Highland Gathering expects to welcome around 23,000 visitors to Dunoon.

The event consists of various elements, including a Ceilidh Tent, ‘Heavies’ Athletics Competitions, Wrestling, Solo Piping, Children’s Entertainment and the 5km Cowal Run. Recently an Argyll Food area has been introduced to showcase fresh produce from the local area. The Cowal Pipe Band Championships have 130 bands competing for various titles, with around 3,000 individuals participating in this exceptional event. The finals of the World Highland Dancing Championships are a highlight of the whole weekend and spectators love to see the talented dancers perform.

The Cowal Highland Gathering is a celebration of Scottish heritage and traditions, and will undoubtedly prove to be another success this year.

The first Loch Eck Country Lodges Annual Boules Championship (sometimes referred to as Petangue) was held on 2nd July with lodge owners and their guests taking part in mixed pairs teams. Due to torrential rain the tournament had been postponed from two weeks previous but on the day the sun shone brightly and a great time was had by all the players and spectators. 

The champions for 2011 were Catherine Blain and Tony Unwin. They will hold the cup for one year and were also presented with memento cups which they can keep.

The Lochgoilhead Steeple Hill Run will be held on Saturday 1st October 2011

The day will start with traditional school sports at 11.30 am in the local primary school. All are welcome to attend and participate.

The Steeple Hill Race will take place at 2pm. It is a challenging cross country run of around 1,200 ft in height! The current record to beat stands at 20.36 minutes held by Craig Ferguson.

Entry for this event is by registration form which must be filled in with a fee of £5 which will be donated to Arrochar Mountain Rescue Team.

The junior race is open to 12-16 year olds and there will be a short route for the 8-11 year olds. The juniors are free to enter but must be registered.

Registration forms will be available from the Lochgoilhead Post Office, School and Drimsynie Leisure Centre at Drimsynie House Hotel.

The Small Acorns Event is in full swing at Hunters Quay Holiday Village, Dunoon!
